Saturday\, February 24\, 2024 was WATTS’ second year hosting the event for Winchester\, VA.  We had 845 walkers come out to participate and raised over $100\,000!\nTHANK YOU for raising funds for WATTS to help the men and women we serve in Winchester\, Frederick\, and Clarke Counties and walking in support of our guests who always have to walk or ‘move along.’\nSave the date for February 22\, 2025!\n  \n(2024 video recap courtesy of Jonathan Harbaugh!)\n\n\n  \n  \n  \n**Walk in Winchester\, VA for WATTS**\nWATTS’s mission is to break the cycle of homelessness one life at a time. We empower individuals to re-enter the workforce and connect individuals to the resources needed to be as self-sufficient as possible while providing a safe\, temporary shelter during extreme weather.\n  \nIn 2009\, a group of faith-based leaders recognized there was a population of homeless adults who do not qualify for admission to other local shelter programs. Realizing these folks would be sleeping outside during the coldest weeks of winter and seeing a solution with their warm church buildings which were empty at night\, WATTS was born. Since that time\, WATTS has grown and expanded to meet the needs of homeless individuals in our area. Today\, we provide 21 weeks of overnight shelter from November to March\, along with a daytime Warming Center in the winter\, and a daytime Cooling Center in the summer. We’ve also added our Transition Out of Homelessness Program\, with staff members who work year-round to assist guests in ending their homelessness.\n

Our overnight shelter operates from November through March each year with our guests receiving the hospitality of churches and other community organizations who provide their buildings for shelter and also make sure guests have a nice dinner as well as breakfast the next morning. Primarily\, WATTS serves individuals from Winchester\, Frederick\, and Clarke counties\, but our doors are open to ANY homeless person needing help\, with many of our guests coming from neighboring Shenandoah\, Warren\, Berkeley\, and Jefferson counties.\n\nDuring the pandemic\, WATTS continued to operate without any lapse in our regularly offered services. In fact\, in the past few years\, WATTS has actually expanded the services we offer. In 2020\, we envisioned and succeeded in opening a wintertime Warming Center where homeless individuals could go during the day to warm up\, get snacks and water\, use a restroom\, and have other basic needs met. The Warming Center was so successful that we have continued to offer it each year since! Similar to the Warming Center\, during the summer of 2021 WATTS further expanded our services and opened a daytime Cooling Center in response to weather extremes of heat and rain. Once again\, we found that it met a great need within our community\, so we have continued that service as well.\n\nOver the years we’ve found that oftentimes the five months when we operate the overnight shelter is not enough time to help someone who is homeless with getting out of homelessness. Many have lost everything\, including vital records and identification. Rebuilding a life and navigating the various agencies is tricky and complex\, which is why WATTS saw a need to expand our services further and create our Transition Support Staff (TSS) team. This team of incredibly passionate and dedicated people work year-round to help our guests with such things as obtaining birth certificates and identification\, assisting with job applications\, forms for Centralized Housing Intake\, and apartments\, applying for Medicaid\, Medicare\, and SNAP benefits\, information and placement in drug and alcohol detox/rehabilitation programs\, and much\, much more. All of these services are crucial to setting our guests on the path to a safe\, stable future.\n\nHomelessness isn’t just the problem of a few; most people today are only one or two catastrophic events away from becoming homeless and once you’re homeless\, getting out is extremely difficult. WATTS is truly a community effort in the fight against homelessness. Donations from generous individuals\, churches\, community organizations\, businesses\, and foundations\, in combination with successful fundraising efforts are the lifeblood that allows us to continue our mission and keep expanding our services. DESCRIPTION:The link below will take you to a sign up page for all the volunteer spots WATTS is helping to fill for this year’s Battlefield Half Marathon. Volunteer spots include Friday\, November 1 at Pro Physical Therapy\, 3127 Valley Ave Winchester\, VA 22601 and November 2 race day at the Kernstown Battlefield\, 610 Battlepark Dr\, Winchester\, VA 22601. We are also looking for someone to sign the national anthem. The race starts at 8am\, we would need someone for about 5-10 minutes prior to the race starting. This year we will not be using Creekside Station for the finish line. Everything will take place inside the Kernstown Battlefield\, unless a volunteer signs up for a water location along the course.
