Coldest Night of the Year fundraiser walk

*Want to go for a Walk?*

Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY) is a winterrific, family-friendly fundraiser walk that takes place in cities all over North America on Saturday, February 24, 2024!  WATTS is excited to host the Walk for Winchester, VA again this year! We were the second-largest location for a CNOY event in the U.S. last year with over 400 walkers – this year our goal is to have 700+ walkers, so we need your help!
Step outside the warmth and comfort of home for a few hours – the purpose of the Walk is to bring awareness, allowing you to experience a little bit of what it might be like to be homeless in the dead of winter.  You’ll also raise funds for WATTS to help the men and women we serve in Winchester, Frederick, and Clarke Counties.  Walk in support of our guests who always have to walk or ‘move along’ and because… it’s cold out there.
Registration is 100% free and everyone can participate in this event!  Grab your family, friends, neighbors, businesses and co-workers, school or civic clubs, church group, organizations, etc. and form a team, or walk individually (individual walkers are invited to join our general WATTS team, Walkers for WATTS captained by our Board President, Mike Ashby!)
CNOY is a peer-to-peer fundraiser, so each walker asks people to sponsor them for walking, exponentially multiplying the impact for WATTS!
There’s a choice between a 2k or 5k route, both of which go along sidewalks through downtown Winchester on the 24th (we’re here to confirm it is a walk, not a run or race, so no training needed!)  The walk steps off from Braddock Street UMC at 5pm that day.  We wrap up with a simple soup kitchen afterwards when you return to the Fellowship Hall.  Here’s the full Walk day schedule:
4pm – Meet (check-in + welcome)
5pm – Move (walk send-off)
6pm – Munch (simple soup kitchen + mingle and reflect)
7pm – Mosey (see you in 2025!)

We hope you’ll join us!  Register NOW and start fundraising!
(the Walk is a culmination of our fundraising efforts from now until February 24)

**Be sure to check to see if your employer does matching funds!!**

What’s a ‘toque’ you ask?  We know them as a beanie, but find out more here (including how to pronounce ‘toque’.) They’re pretty cool this year and you can get one if you raise at least $150 of verified funds by Walk day ($75 for youth 17 and under!)

WATTS’s mission is to break the cycle of homelessness one life at a time. We empower individuals to re-enter the workforce and connect individuals to the resources needed to be as self-sufficient as possible while providing a safe, temporary shelter during extreme weather.

In 2009, a group of faith-based leaders recognized there was a population of homeless adults who do not qualify for admission to other local shelter programs. Realizing these folks would be sleeping outside during the coldest weeks of winter and seeing a solution with their warm church buildings which were empty at night, WATTS was born. Since that time, WATTS has grown and expanded to meet the needs of homeless individuals in our area. Today, we provide 21 weeks of overnight shelter from November to March, along with a daytime Warming Center in the winter, and a daytime Cooling Center in the summer. We’ve also added our Transition Out of Homelessness Program, with staff members who work year-round to assist guests in ending their homelessness.
